A few evenings later the team met at the local hotel for dinner and to listen to a new band try out their stuff. When he and Damian had arrived, nobody seemed surprised that they sat together or that Damian had his arm resting on the back of his chair, just as the boss and Jack had theirs on Bret’s and Pip’s.

During dinner the conversation, as usual, centered on the business of the Rescue Company. There was a small discussion on the pros and cons of a new wireless mike Tony had ordered. Treb was just going to ask Bret about a permit he needed to have renewed, when something caught the light by Pip’s ear.

“Hey Pip, what’s that in your ear?” he asked.

Pip pushed his blond hair aside and showed everyone a shiny gold hoop earring with a sparkly diamond chip set in it. Giving Jack an irritated look he said, “Someone got all growly when I was trying to help this poor lady at a CPR class the other day.”

“Now sweets, I apologized to her. But she did have her hands all over you.” Jack tried to give Pip a hug, but he was having none of that.

“She didn’t have her hands all over me, I gave her a hug because she was completely humiliated when she broke poor Millie and had started crying.”

“Wait,” Alex interrupted. “Who’s Millie?”

“The county hospital’s CPR manikin,” Pip answered. “She was so old and should have been replaced long ago. One of the students was preforming CPR on her and she just broke in half. It was terrible.”

“What was terrible was how that student was pushing that manikin’s chest so hard it looked like she trying to pile drive it down to China,” Jack said.

“So she was enthusiastic,” Pip defended.

“Enthusiastic? Sweets, her knees weren’t even touching the ground anymore. She was sort of propelling herself on that thing.”

By this time everyone was laughing.

“Well, at least she was trying.”

“Why do you call the manikin Millie?” Tony asked.

“Her head and neck were kind of broken and someone had put duct tape on it and it looked like long hair. Then there must have been a crack or something where you preform chest compressions, because someone put a piece of tape over that. On the tape they wrote, ‘Millie,’” Pip explained.

“So what happened to Millie?” Bret asked

“Pip made me wrap her in a blanket and then we boxed her up and sent her back to the company,” Jack answered.

“Ah, that explains the UPS invoice, order and donation purchase Rescue for Hire made to the hospital,” Tony said.

“Jack, you replaced Millie?” Pip’s eyes were shining with love.

Jack blushed and beamed under his partner’s adoration. “Cade and I discussed it and decided that due to the economy the company would purchase a new Millie for the hospital.”

Treb watched as Pip melted into Jack’s arms and their lips met, the two becoming oblivious to the rest of the world. It seemed to Treb, Jack having to buy Pip an earring because he was upset was a lot of drama about nothing.
